Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
